Port Phillip Bay (Australia) polluted with microplastics, experts say

Environmental experts and campaigners have ­expressed concern about the number of tiny plastic particles, known as microplastics, found in Port Phillip Bay that have come through the Yarra and Maribyrnong rivers and threaten aquatic life.

Microplastics have been found washed up at many of the state’s beaches.

As a result, Port Phillip Baykeeper Neil Blake has teamed up with Yarra Riverkeeper Ian Penrose to trawl the water with a specially designed net for plastics as part of a trial initiated by Port Phillip Council and paid for under the Government’s Litter Hot Spots ­Program (…) (Kylie Adoranti, Heraldsun.com.au, May 28 2014)
